Leucoderma or Vitiligo is a de-pigmentation of the skin which is quite common with global prevalence. It is a distressing skin disease, where the word Leucoderma signifies ‘to have white skin’. Pigment, known as, melanin is gradually lost from the dermal layers which results into white patches. These patches may look bad, particularly in persons who have dark complexions. Leucoderma may affect any person, age and in any type of skins.
It is a lifelong skin disorder that leads to the production of white de-pigmented patches that further develops in other part of the skin. Leucoderma spots appear when melanocytes present within the skin start fading. Melanocytes are the cells that are responsible for the production of skin pigment, known as melanin. It is melanin which is responsible for the color of the skin and responsible for protecting it from harmful UV rays. Leucoderma can affect hair, inside of the mouth and the eyes. In most instances, the affected part of the skin remains faded for the rest of their life.
